About the trip
Munnar is Kerala's best-known tea country, where rolling estates cover the hills around the meeting of three rivers. Visitors come for cool weather, the Nilgiri tahr at Eravikulam, dams, viewpoints and the tea museum. From Madurai the road goes west through Theni and Bodinayakanur, then climbs the Bodimettu ghat into Kerala. It makes a long day trip, but a night's stay is better.

On the road
Drive via Usilampatti, Theni and Bodi, then up the Bodimettu ghat and past the Pooppara check post. Start by 5 am and avoid the ghat after sunset.
