Getting to the falls
Private cars are not practical on the last stretch because the track is full of rocks, ruts and potholes. Instead, jeeps leave from the jeep point at Gatevalsa and drop visitors near the railway line. From there it is roughly half a kilometre on foot through the forest to the base of the falls, with steps on the steeper parts.
Plan on at least two hours for the round trip from Gatevalsa. The jeep usually waits about an hour at the drop point, so keep an eye on the time while you are at the water.
Costs
Expect to pay around ₹100 per person for a return jeep ride, though fares can go up considerably at busy times. If you are travelling alone or in a small group, you can share a jeep with others to cut the cost.
Food and shopping
Small stalls run by local tribal families sell snacks, bottled water, biscuits and wild honey near the falls. The dish to try is bamboo chicken: marinated chicken packed into a length of green bamboo and cooked over coals, which gives it a smoky flavour.
Best time to visit
Visit between the monsoon and February, roughly July to February, when the falls carry plenty of water; October to February is the most comfortable period. In summer the flow drops sharply and the falls can run dry.
Tips for your visit
- Carry a change of clothes if you plan to get into the water.
- Wear sandals or shoes with grip for the forest path and the wet rocks.
- Combine with Borra Caves and Araku Valley; we can arrange the car and timings.
