Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple travel guide

In the village of Aranmula in Pathanamthitta district, beside the Pamba river, stands a temple to Krishna as Parthasarathy, the charioteer who guided Arjuna. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams praised by the Alvar saints and among the most important Vishnu shrines in Kerala. Legends and history

The name is said to come from aaru mula, six pieces of bamboo, because the idol was carried here on a bamboo raft. Tradition holds that Arjuna built the temple to atone for killing Karna, and that it is one of five Kerala temples linked to the five Pandava brothers, the others being at Thrichittatt, Puliyur, Thiruvanvandoor and Thrikodithanam.

The idol shows Krishna in the fierce moment when he raised his discus against Bhishma on the Kurukshetra battlefield. The shrine is mentioned in Tamil devotional works composed roughly from the 6th to the 9th century.

Architecture

Built in the classic Kerala manner, the temple stands on a raised platform. Eighteen steps lead up to the eastern tower and 57 to the northern one. The walls use laterite on a granite base, the sanctum has a sloping roof, and the gateways are two-storeyed. Wooden and stucco panels show scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and there are sub-shrines to Balarama, Sastha, Yakshi, Nagaraja and Bhagavathy.

Festivals

The temple calendar has several events that draw visitors from across Kerala:

Aranmula mirrors

Aranmula Kannadi are mirrors made from polished metal alloy rather than glass. The craft is traced to artisan families brought here by a Travancore ruler, and the exact recipe is still guarded by a few households. A mirror makes a lovely keepsake; buy from recognised workshops in the village.
