History
Work started under Vishnuvardhana, and the complex took over a century to reach its final form. The temple suffered raids and damage in later centuries but was repaired several times, which is why so much of its detail survives. In 2023 it was inscribed by UNESCO as part of the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas.
What to see
The temple stands on a raised, star-shaped platform, or jagati, that lets you walk around it and study the walls up close. Hundreds of sculpted figures cover the exterior, with scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, friezes of elephants and dancers, and deities in many forms.
Look out for the madanikas, the graceful bracket figures of women dancing, dressing or playing music, set under the eaves. Inside, lathe-turned pillars and a carved ceiling lead to the sanctum, where the image of Chennakeshava stands about 4 m tall. A local guide is well worth hiring to point out details you would easily miss.
Festivals
The annual Chennakeshava Rathotsava, the chariot festival, is the biggest event. By long-standing custom it opens with a recitation by a local Muslim cleric, a tradition often mentioned as a symbol of the town's shared heritage. Vaikuntha Ekadashi also draws large crowds.
Timings and dress code
The temple is open for darshan from 9 AM until 5.30 PM. There is no strict dress code, but modest clothing is expected: men usually wear a dhoti or trousers along with a shirt or upper cloth, and a saree, churidar or salwar kameez for women. October to March is the most comfortable season, and early mornings give soft light for photographs.
How to reach
Belur is roughly 220 km from Bengaluru, about four hours by road. Hassan is the nearest major railway town, and Mangaluru airport is the closest airport. Most travellers pair Belur with Halebidu, around 16 km away. We can arrange a Hoysala temple circuit from Bengaluru or Mysuru.
