Chengannur Mahadeva Temple travel guide

Chengannur Mahadeva Temple is among the oldest and most respected temples in central Kerala. It is a shrine to both Shiva and Parvati: Shiva faces east and the goddess faces west, in the same sanctum. Devotees count it among the Shakti Peethas, and it is one of Kerala's major Bhagavathy temples. The six-acre complex has a circular sanctum and fine wood carvings, and its rituals include some found nowhere else.

Legend and history

According to tradition, when the gods gathered in the Himalaya for the wedding of Shiva and Parvati, the sage Agastya was asked to sit on a hill in the south to keep the earth balanced. Afterwards the divine couple visited him there, and the goddess stayed for 28 days. The hill was called Shonadri in Sanskrit and Chenkunnu, red hill, in Malayalam, which in time gave the town its name. The temple is also linked in local belief with the Mahabharata.

What to see

Devotees regard the Shivalinga as self-manifested and carries a gold-plated covering in the form of Ardhanarishvara. The sreekovil sits on a raised base reached by five steps, with guardian figures beside its single door. The roof and several pillars carry wood and stucco carvings of scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Sub-shrines honour Ganapathi, Sastha, Chandikeswara, Neelagriva, Ganga and the Nagas, and there is a Krishna shrine close by.

Festivals

The Thripputhu ritual, associated with the goddess's menstruation and seen as a sign of fertility, is unique to this temple. The goddess's shrine closes for three days while worship continues before another image, and once three days have passed the idol is carried to the river for a sacred bath before returning in procession.

Timings and visitor rules

Morning worship runs from 4:30 until 11:30, and the temple reopens for the evening from 5 pm until 8 pm. Traditional dress is expected. Entry is for Hindus only, and photography inside is not allowed.

How to reach

Chengannur railway station, on the main line through central Kerala, is about 2 km from the temple. Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram airports are each roughly 120 km away, and state and private buses serve the town well.
