What to see and do
A two-day trip covers the main sights without rushing. Spend one morning on a trek or drive up to Mullayanagiri peak for wide views over the Western Ghats, then continue to Baba Budangiri, the hills where coffee is said to have first been planted in India.

Coffee country
Estate visits are the heart of any trip. Many plantations let guests follow the whole process, from picking and pulping to drying, roasting and packing. The harvest months of December and January are the best time for this. Staying in an estate homestay is the easiest way to see it closely, and many hosts also serve freshly brewed filter coffee from their own beans, which is a treat in itself. Carry light woollens, as evenings in the hills can be cool even outside winter.
Best time to visit
September to May is generally the most comfortable period for sightseeing and trekking. The monsoon from July to September brings temperatures of about 18 to 26°C, lush scenery and fewer visitors, though rain can make trails slippery and interrupt plans. The warmer summer weeks are best avoided if you dislike heat.
How to reach
Mangaluru has the nearest airport, with prepaid taxis for the onward drive. Kadur, about 40 km away, is the closest railway station. Good roads connect Chikkamagaluru with Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Hubballi and Hassan, and we can arrange a car from any of these cities or combine the trip with Belur and Halebidu.
