When it happens
Bastille Day falls on 14 July each year, the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille in Paris in 1789, now the French national day. In Puducherry the main events take place over that single day, starting early in the morning. July is warm and humid on the coast, with the occasional shower.
How it is celebrated
The morning opens with a parade of veterans, many in uniform with their medals, along the seafront. The national anthems of India and France are played and the two flags fly side by side, which gives the ceremony a quiet, moving tone. Later in the day the mood lightens, with music, dance performances, talent shows and community events, where local Tamil artists share the stage with French-style programmes.
Where to see it
Goubert Avenue, the promenade along the sea in the French Quarter, is the centre of the celebrations. Arrive early to find a place along the route. In the evening, the cafés and bakeries of the White Town serve French-inspired dishes, from baguettes to pastries and fusion plates, and the streets stay busy well after dark.
Tips for your visit
Book your stay well ahead, as rooms in the French Quarter fill up for the day. Wear light cotton clothes and carry water. Some moments of the ceremony are solemn, so keep phones and conversation low while the anthems play and wreaths are laid.
