How it is celebrated
The festival is part cultural event, part seaside fair. Stages on the beach host music performances and folk and contemporary dance, while magicians and street performers keep children busy between shows. Out on the sand, visitors join friendly games of beach volleyball and cricket, and there are water-ball rides and other outdoor activities.
Food is a large part of the day. Stalls serve Gujarati favourites, from savoury farsan to sweet treats, alongside quick snacks for those who want something familiar.
Where it happens
Tithal Beach lies west of Valsad on the Arabian Sea. Its sand is dark rather than golden, and the water is best enjoyed from the shore rather than for swimming. Two temples on the seafront, a Swaminarayan temple and a Sai Baba temple, attract a steady stream of visitors throughout the year, so the beach has a relaxed, local feel even outside festival days.
When it happens
Dates are announced by the local organisers and Gujarat Tourism, and they have varied over the years. Check the current schedule before planning a trip specifically for the festival. Even without the event, Tithal makes a pleasant evening stop in the cooler months, when sea breezes keep the beach comfortable and the promenade stalls stay open until late.
How to reach
Valsad railway station is on the busy Mumbai to Ahmedabad line, and many trains stop there. From the station, autos and taxis cover the short drive to Tithal. Surat is the nearest large city, and Mumbai is within a comfortable day's drive.
We can plan a south Gujarat itinerary that includes Tithal alongside Daman and Surat.
