What to see
Look out for the defences: narrow gates, drawbridges and a tunnel said to run from the Durbar Hall to a palace at the base of the hill. Clever water systems once cooled the royal quarters in summer.
- Fateh Darwaza, the main gate, named after Aurangzeb's victorious entry
- Bala Hissar, the highest point, with views over Hyderabad
- Ibrahim Qutb Shah's mosque and the Taramati Mosque
- Jagadamba Mahakali Temple, a Rama temple and a Yellamma temple
- Ruined palaces, cannons, water tanks and an ancient baobab tree
The famous acoustics
A handclap under the dome of Fateh Darwaza can be heard at Bala Hissar, around a kilometre away at the top. It served as an alarm system, and guides still demonstrate it for visitors.
Diamonds
The Golconda region was the trading hub for some of the world's most famous diamonds, including the Koh-i-Noor, the Hope, the Nassak and the Noor-ul-Ain.
Timings and tips
Entry is from 9 am to 5 pm, and arriving early avoids the heat and crowds. Allow three to four hours, wear good shoes for the climb, and carry water. Stay on for the evening sound-and-light show, which tells the fort's story. The most comfortable months for a visit run from October to March.
How to reach
The fort is about 11 to 13 km from central Hyderabad. Hyderabad railway station is around 10 km away, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport around 26 km, and a city bus stop sits just outside the gate. You can also take the metro part of the way and an auto for the rest. We can include Golconda in a Hyderabad city tour.
