Irumbai Shiva Temple (Mahakaleswarar) travel guide

In the village of Irumbai, a short ride from Auroville and Pondicherry, stands an old Shiva temple counted among the shrines sung in the Thevaram hymns. The Lord here is worshipped as Mahakaleswarar. The temple has been renovated recently, but its best-known feature is ancient: a Linga split into pieces and held together with copper wire, tied to a local story about the Siddhar Kaduveli.

The legend

Local tradition says the Siddhar Kaduveli once meditated here with such intensity that the land dried up and no rain fell. Desperate villagers sent a temple dancer to break his concentration. When she finally succeeded, rain returned. She danced before the shrine and the Siddhar, seeing Shiva's presence in her, bent to set right her fallen anklet. People mocked him for touching a dancer's feet, and the Linga is said to have cracked apart as a sign in his defence.

What to see

Inside, look for the fragmented Linga bound with copper, which the priests will usually point out if you ask. There is also a shrine for Subramanya. The approach is shaded by coconut palms and large banyan trees, and the village setting keeps the atmosphere calm, a welcome contrast to the busier temples of Pondicherry town.

Worship and festivals

Devotees bring vilva leaves, milk, coconut and sandal paste, and special abhishekams are done with milk, sandal, rose water and fruit, as well as a golden abhishekam. Pradosham days, Maha Shivaratri, Karthigai Deepam, the annual Brahmotsavam and Thaipusam draw the largest crowds, when the temple is decorated with kolams and flowers.

Timings and dress

Darshan is possible between 6:30 in the morning and 12 noon, and again between 4 pm and 8 pm. There is no strict code, but clothing that covers shoulders and knees is respectful.

How to reach

Take a bus or train to Pondicherry, then a local bus, auto or taxi to Irumbai on the Tindivanam road. Chennai is the nearest major airport. It pairs well with Auroville in a single day, and we can include it in a Pondicherry temple circuit.
