Bryant Park, Kodaikanal

Bryant Park is a well-kept botanical garden on the eastern side of Kodaikanal Lake, named after H.D. Bryant, a forest officer from Madurai who laid it out in the early 20th century. Lawns, flower beds, old trees and a glasshouse make it one of the easiest and most pleasant stops in Kodaikanal, especially for families who want a slow hour among flowers and fresh hill air.

What to see

The park holds a wide range of plants, including many varieties and hybrids of flowers, shrubs and trees, set out in terraces and formal beds. Roses, dahlias and seasonal annuals give colour for much of the year.

The glasshouse is the centrepiece, sheltering exotic plants, ferns and flowering species that would not survive outdoors in the cool climate. Take a slow loop through it before heading out to the lawns, where there are benches and shady spots to rest.

The flower show

Every May, as part of Kodaikanal's summer festival, the park hosts a horticultural show with elaborate floral arrangements, sculptures made of flowers and competitive displays of plants. It is the busiest and most colourful time to visit, but also the most crowded, so arrive early in the day.

Best time to visit

The gardens look good throughout the year, but April to June is peak flowering season. Mornings are quieter and fresher. During the monsoon, paths can be wet and slippery, although the greenery is at its lushest.

Tips and nearby sights

There is a modest entry fee, with an extra charge for cameras. The park is within town limits, close to the lake, so you can walk or take a short taxi ride from the bus stand. Nursery stalls near the gate sell seedlings and plants if you want a souvenir.

Combine the visit with a walk or boat ride on Kodaikanal Lake, the views from Coaker's Walk and a trip to the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory. We can arrange Kodaikanal sightseeing with a car and driver from Madurai, Dindigul or Virudhachalam.
