On the water
A houseboat cruise is the classic Kumarakom experience. Day cruises of around four hours loop through the local waters, while overnight trips head across the lake towards Alappuzha, with meals cooked on board and a night moored on the backwaters. Houseboats usually board around 12:30 pm.
For the narrow village canals, take a shikara, a small covered boat for four to ten people, to watch fishing, washing and daily life along the banks, ideally around sunset. Motorboats are the cheapest way to see the lake but offer less of the quiet.
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
This 14-acre sanctuary on the lakeshore was once a rubber estate developed by the Englishman Alfred George Baker, whom locals nicknamed 'Kari Saipu'. It attracts resident and migratory birds such as herons, egrets, cormorants, teals and flycatchers. It opens at about 6:30 am and closes at 5:30 pm; the first hours of the morning are best. It is about 2.5 km from Kumarakom junction.

Best time to visit
You can visit in any month, though the most popular season runs from September to March, with temperatures of roughly 18–27°C. From April the heat builds towards 38°C. The monsoon, June to September, brings heavy rain; houseboat trips may be limited in bad weather, but the countryside is at its greenest and it is a rewarding time for birders.
