The goddess and her shrine
Bhadrakali Amman is shown with a crown of flames, an expression of her anger against wrongdoing. Devotees come to her for protection from black magic and ill will, for help recovering lost or stolen money, and for success in business. Beside her stands a tall figure of Ayyanar with his horse, known as Adaikalam Kaatha Ayyanar, the one who gave her refuge. Unusually, he stands rather than rides.
Rituals and offerings
The temple has its own distinctive customs, and watching them is part of the experience.
- Garlands of lemons offered to cool the goddess's temper
- Sarees offered in thanksgiving
- Special poojas every Friday
- Milk abhishekam on full-moon nights
- A 1008-lamp pooja on the first Tuesday of each Tamil month
- Devotees in costume collecting alms on the streets to offer to the goddess
Timings
Morning darshan runs between 6 am and 11 am, and the evening session between 4 pm and 8 pm. Fridays and full-moon evenings are the busiest. Wear modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
How to reach
Madurai airport is the closest. By road, the temple is about half an hour from Madurai, and there are buses from Madurai and Trichy towards Sivaganga, with local buses to the village. Sivaganga railway station is the nearest, with taxis and autos onward. We usually combine Madapuram with the Thiruppuvanam Shiva temple on the same road.

Pilgrims often pair this visit with the Meenakshi Amman temple, Thiruparankundram Murugan temple and Azhagar Kovil in and around Madurai, all within an easy day's drive.
