The legend
According to local tradition, Guru's son Kacha was held captive in the world of the asuras. Guru performed long penance here, praying to Vishnu for help. Vishnu appeared on the day of the Chithirai star, riding a splendid chariot, and sent his discus, the Sudarshana Chakra, to rescue the boy. The spot where Guru prayed became the temple, which still has a quiet village setting away from Madurai's crowds, and the name Chithira Ratha Vallabha, the Lord of the chariot on Chithirai, recalls that day. Families with members born under this star often plan a visit on the star day each month.
What to see
The main deity, Vishnu with his consorts, is made of sandalwood. Chakrathalwar, the personified discus, and Guru have their own shrines, and both are revered as self-manifested forms. Because of the Guru link, the temple is especially crowded during Guru Peyarchi, when Jupiter moves into a new sign.
Festivals and timings
Vaikunta Ekadasi in the month of Margazhi and Guru Peyarchi are the main events. The Panguni and Chithirai festival season from March to May is also a good time to visit. Darshan hours are usually 6 AM to 1 PM, then 5 PM to 8 PM. Modest clothing that covers the shoulders is expected.
How to reach
Regular buses run from Madurai's Periyar bus stand, and on festival days buses and autos go right up to the temple. Madurai Junction is the nearest railway station, and the drive from Madurai airport takes about an hour. We can combine this temple with Madurai's Meenakshi Amman temple and other Navagraha-linked shrines in the region.
