What to see
From the car park, a short walk up leads to the summit viewpoint. The telescope house at the top has two telescopes, and there is usually a queue to use them. On a clear day you can look out over the ridges and valleys of the Nilgiris and, beyond them, towards the Coimbatore plains and the Mysuru plateau.
Things to do
The peak is a regular shooting location for Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films, so do not be surprised to see a film crew at work.
- Take in the view from the summit and the telescope house
- Try a pony ride near the top
- Snack on roasted corn, tea, cucumber and fresh fruit from the stalls
- Photograph the eucalyptus and shola forest on the way up
Best time to visit
Go early in the morning, before mist and clouds roll in, for the clearest views. The dry months from October to June are the best season; during the monsoon the summit is often covered in cloud. It is always cooler at the peak than in Ooty town, so carry a warm layer.
Tips and how to reach
Allow one to two hours for the visit. Weekends and holidays get very busy, and private vehicles may be stopped at a lower point, with forest department shuttles for the final stretch. Taxis and autos from Ooty are the easiest way up. Combine Doddabetta with the tea factory and chocolate museum on the same road, or continue to Kotagiri. We can arrange a Nilgiris tour from Coimbatore or Mettupalayam.
