Sabarimala Sastha Temple travel guide

The hill shrine of Lord Ayyappa at Sabarimala, in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district, draws one of the largest pilgrim crowds anywhere in the world. It sits at about 914 m in the Western Ghats, ringed by eighteen hills, and can only be reached on foot. For devotees the journey is as important as the darshan itself, beginning weeks earlier at home with a period of strict discipline.

The legend of Ayyappa

Devotees know Ayyappa as Hariharaputra, the son of Shiva and of Vishnu in his Mohini form, born to defeat the demoness Mahishi. As an infant he was found near the Pamba river by King Rajashekara of Pandalam, who raised him as Manikandan, named for the bell tied around his neck. After fulfilling his purpose, including the famous episode of bringing back tigress's milk, he asked the king to build a shrine on Sabari hill, and the idol was installed there on Makara Sankranti.

Rituals and customs

Pilgrims observe a 41-day vratham before the trip, starting when they put on a mala of Rudraksha or Tulasi beads. They dress in black, blue or saffron, and carry the Irumudi, a two-part bundle holding a ghee-filled coconut and offerings, on their heads all the way to the shrine. The chant Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa is heard constantly along the route.

Festivals and season

The main season runs through Mandala Pooja and ends with Makaravilakku in mid-January, when the Makara Jyothi is sighted on Ponnambalamedu hill. Late December to late January is the busiest and most auspicious stretch. The temple also opens for Vishu and Onam and on the first days of each Malayalam month. Traditionally, women between 10 and 50 do not make the pilgrimage; check current rules before you plan.

How to reach

Most pilgrims come by road to Pamba, from where a walk of roughly 4 km climbs to the Sannidhanam. The closest railheads are Chengannur, Thiruvalla and Kottayam, each around 90 km away and well served by trains from other states. By road, Kochi airport is about 160 km away and Thiruvananthapuram about 170 km. We can arrange vehicles for groups from Tamil Nadu, including the Erumeli route.
