Ponmudi travel guide

Ponmudi, meaning golden peak in Malayalam, is a small hill station about 55 to 60 km north-east of Thiruvananthapuram. At around 1,100 metres, it is noticeably cooler than the coast, with misty slopes, tea gardens, forest streams and plenty of butterflies. The drive up, with 22 hairpin bends, is half the fun. Facilities on top are limited, so most people treat it as a day trip from the capital.

What to see and do

The summit itself is a place for short walks, views and cool air. Guided eco-tourism walks, trekking and soft adventure activities are organised in the area. The name is often linked to the golden glow on the misty hills at sunrise and sunset. Around Ponmudi are several places worth a detour:

Best time to visit

From March to May, days stay fairly mild compared with the plains, roughly 21°C to 34°C, and this is a busy period. November to February is cool and clear, with December the coldest month, and many visitors prefer it for sightseeing. From June to early September heavy rain makes the ghat road slippery and treks unsafe, so it is best avoided.

How to reach

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is about 58 km away and Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station about 56 km, and the drive takes around one and a half to two hours. KSRTC and private buses run up from the city, but a taxi gives you freedom to stop at viewpoints and Kallar.

Tips for your visit

Leave early to reach the top before clouds roll in, carry a light jacket and snacks, and plan to be back down before dark, as the road is narrow and winding. Treks into sanctuary areas need forest department permission. We can arrange a day trip from Thiruvananthapuram or Kovalam with a car and driver.
