Keshava Temple, Somanathapura, Somnathpur

The Keshava Temple at Somanathapura is the most complete Hoysala temple still standing, and a short drive from Mysuru. Somanatha Dandanayaka, a general serving King Narasimha III, completed it in 1268 and dedicated it to Vishnu as Keshava. It is now a protected monument rather than a working temple, so visitors come for the stonework, which is some of the most detailed carving anywhere in South India.

History

The temple was built at the height of Hoysala rule, when the dynasty controlled much of present-day southern Karnataka. The village itself takes its name from the general who paid for the shrine. In 2023 it became one of the three temples, alongside Belur and Halebidu, grouped under the UNESCO World Heritage listing called the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas.

What to see

The complex stands on a raised star-shaped platform inside a walled courtyard lined with small cells. Three shrines open off a shared hall, each topped by its own tower. The outer walls are carved in horizontal bands showing elephants, horsemen, scrolling foliage and scenes from the epics, with larger figures of gods above.

Inside, look for the images of Krishna playing the flute and of Vishnu in the form of Janardhana, as well as the finely turned pillars and the carved ceiling panels of the hall. Take time over the lower friezes; each band tells a continuous story.

Timings and dress

Gates open at 9 AM and close at 5.30 PM daily, and there is a small entry ticket collected by the Archaeological Survey. Although there are no daily rituals, it is still a sacred space, so wear modest clothes that cover shoulders and knees. A saree, salwar kameez or churidar suits women, and trousers or a dhoti with a shirt suits men.

Best time to visit

October to March brings the most pleasant weather. Arrive in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is low and brings out the depth of the carvings, and when the stone courtyard is cooler underfoot.

How to reach

Somanathapura is roughly 35 km east of Mysuru, about an hour and a half by road depending on traffic. Mysuru airport is the nearest airport and Mysuru Junction the nearest major railway station. We can include the temple in a Mysuru day tour along with Talakadu or Shivanasamudra.
