Vadakkunnathan Temple, Thrissur

The Vadakkunnathan Temple stands on a small hill in the centre of Thrissur, and the city has grown in a ring around it. Dedicated to Shiva, it is one of the finest examples of traditional Kerala temple architecture, with wooden shrines, a theatre hall and old murals. The open ground around it, the Thekkinkadu Maidan, hosts the famous Thrissur Pooram. Entry to the inner complex is for Hindus only.

Legend and history

Tradition holds that Parasurama, after raising the land of Kerala from the sea, invited Shiva to live there, and that Shiva first appeared as a lingam under a banyan tree at this spot. A later Kochi ruler moved the lingam to the present shrine. Parts of the temple are linked to the legendary master carpenter Perumthachan, and the complex is at least several centuries old. It is protected as a national monument, along with its murals.

What to see

Four gopurams face the four directions, and within the walls are separate shrines to Shiva, Parvati, Sankaranarayana, Ganesha and Rama. The Koothambalam, a hall built for Koodiyattam and Chakyar Koothu performances, has fine woodwork. Murals on the walls show scenes from the Mahabharata. The Shiva lingam is not visible, because it is covered by a mound of ghee built up over centuries of offerings, said to be around nine feet high.

Festivals

Thrissur Pooram, in Medam, a month of the Malayalam calendar (April–May), brings caparisoned elephants, percussion ensembles and fireworks to the grounds outside. Maha Shivaratri in February or March is the main festival inside the temple. On the first day of Karkidakam in July, the Aanayoottu ritual sees dozens of elephants fed by devotees.

Timings and dress code

The temple is open in two sessions. Men must wear a mundu or dhoti and enter bare-chested; women should wear a saree, a salwar suit or other traditional dress. Jeans, shorts and short skirts are not allowed.

How to reach

Thrissur railway station is about 4 km away on the main Kerala line, and buses and autorickshaws run to the temple from there. Cochin International Airport is roughly 58 km south. For quieter visits, choose October to February, when the weather is cooler.
