Tirupur travel guide

Tirupur, west of Erode and east of Coimbatore, is best known as India's knitwear capital. Thousands of garment units here stitch T-shirts and cotton clothing for international brands, which earned the town the nickname Dollar City. For visitors that means excellent factory-surplus shopping, but the district also has old Shiva and Murugan temples, dams and a waterfall in the foothills of the Western Ghats.

Shopping

The Khaderpet market near the railway station is the place for surplus and export-quality garments at low prices. Stock changes daily, so it pays to browse several shops and check stitching and sizes before buying. Many shops sell in bulk, but most will also sell single pieces.

Weather and best time to visit

Tirupur has a warm tropical climate. December to February is the most comfortable period, with mild days, low humidity and little rain. April to June is the hottest stretch and is best avoided for sightseeing. The southwest and northeast monsoons bring rain between June and November; October, when the countryside turns green, is a good month for the waterfall and dams.

How to reach

Tirupur lies on the main Chennai–Coimbatore railway line, so plenty of express and passenger trains stop here. The town has no airport; Coimbatore airport is the nearest and is roughly an hour away by road. Buses connect Tirupur with Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Madurai and Chennai. We can plan a Tirupur shopping trip combined with the Thirumoorthy and Avinashi temples, starting from Virudhachalam or any nearby town.
