History
The Mewar rulers used Jag Niwas as a cool escape during the hot months, with marble courtyards, fountains and rooms decorated with glass inlay and painted walls. In the 20th century the palace was converted into a hotel, and it is now run as a five-star property. Its setting also made it a favourite for films, weddings and photographers. Lake Pichola itself is an artificial lake, first dug in the 14th century and later enlarged by Maharana Udai Singh II, who founded Udaipur on its eastern shore.
How to see it
Entry to the palace itself is generally limited to hotel guests and those with restaurant bookings. Everyone else can enjoy it from a boat ride on Lake Pichola, which usually leaves from the City Palace jetty or Lal Ghat and often includes a stop at Jag Mandir, the other island palace. The views from the City Palace terraces and from the ghats at sunset are also very good.
Best time to visit
September to February is the pleasant season in Udaipur. After a good monsoon the lake is full, which is when the palace looks its best. Summer afternoons are hot, so plan boat rides for late afternoon. In years of weak rain the water level can drop noticeably, which is worth knowing if photographs are the main goal.
Tips for your visit
We can arrange Udaipur stays, boat rides and a local guide as part of a wider Rajasthan trip.
- Book a sunset boat ride in advance during the peak winter months.
- Combine the lake with the City Palace, Jagdish Temple and Bagore ki Haveli, all close by.
- Carry a light shawl for evenings on the water in winter.
