What to see and do
The lighthouse, built in 1901, stands on a rocky outcrop at the edge of the beach. Visitors are usually allowed up in the late afternoon, roughly between 4 pm and 6 pm, and a narrow spiral staircase leads to the top, from where there are wide views along the coast and out to sea.
Otherwise the beach is for strolling, photography and watching the sun go down over the Arabian Sea. Some operators offer kayaking and other water activities; check conditions and safety arrangements before you join one, as the sea here can be rough, especially in the monsoon.
Nearby
Udupi is a short drive away and is known for the Sri Krishna Matha founded by Madhvacharya in the thirteenth century, the Anantheshwara temple and, of course, its vegetarian food. Along the coast, the beaches at Mattu, Padubidri and Padukere are all close by and can be combined with Kaup in a half-day drive. Malpe Beach and St Mary's Island are also within easy reach.
Best time to visit
October to March has the most comfortable weather and calmer seas. The monsoon, from June to September, brings heavy rain and strong waves, and swimming is not advisable then.
How to reach
Mangaluru International Airport is the nearest airport, about 40 km away, with taxis available for the drive. Udupi is the closest major railway station on the Konkan line. National Highway 66 runs past Kaup, so buses between Mangaluru and Udupi can drop you close to the beach. The road from Bengaluru via the ghats is also a popular drive.
