What to see
Christian, Muslim and Hindu hill shrines sit within a few kilometres of each other, which gives Vagamon an unusual character.
- Pine forest: a planted grove of tall pines, good for a short walk and photographs.
- Vagamon meadows: open, rolling grass slopes, and the base for paragliding in season.
- Kurisumala: a hill with a small chapel on top, a steep pilgrim path and the Kurisumala Ashram nearby.
- Thangal Para: a rock hill with the shrine of a Sufi saint and wide views; it hosts an annual Uroos.
- Murugan Hill: the third of Vagamon's three landmark hills, with a small temple.
- Marmala waterfall and Vagamon lake: a forest cascade and a small lake with boating.
Things to do
Trekking is the main activity, from gentle meadow walks to the climb up Kurisumala. Vagamon also hosts paragliding, rock climbing and zip-lining, run by local operators. Wildflowers and orchids are common along the trails after the rains.
Weather and best time
Temperatures typically stay between about 10°C and 25°C. March to June is pleasant and clear. July to September brings heavy monsoon showers and mist, which suits travellers who like the rain. October to March is cool and dry, and September to May is the most popular window overall.
How to reach
Vagamon is about 100 km from Kochi and roughly 60 km from Kottayam. Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport, and Kottayam is the nearest railway station; taxis and buses run from both. Buses also connect Vagamon with Kottayam, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, and the town is easy to combine with Munnar, Thekkady or the Kumarakom backwaters. We can arrange a car for a Kerala hills and backwaters circuit.
