Athitheeswarar Temple, Vaniyambadi

The Athitheeswarar temple is an old Shiva temple at Vaniyambadi, beside the Palar river in northern Tamil Nadu. It is regarded as a parihara sthalam, a place for remedial prayers, especially for people born under the Punarpoosam star, which is also Lord Rama's birth star. Built in the Dravidian style, it is believed to be more than a thousand years old.

Beliefs and customs

Punarpoosam is considered an auspicious day here for starting new ventures, such as buying provisions, holding a housewarming or purchasing property, in the hope of prosperity. Parents often bring children to pray to Goddess Saraswati before they start school, asking for success in their studies. Devotees perform abhishekam for the deity with milk, honey, river water and cooked rice, and local hoteliers traditionally contribute by feeding the poor.

Special features

Unusually for a Shiva temple, the shrine looks towards the west. Its best-known image is Dakshinamurthy seated on Nandi, holding a deer and an axe, with his hand in the chin mudra: the thumb and forefinger meet, and the remaining three fingers are held apart. The gesture is read as the individual soul joining the universal spirit after leaving behind ego, karma and illusion.

Festivals

Visiting information

The temple opens in the morning, from about 6–6:30 am until late morning (10:30–11:30 am), and again in the evening from 5 pm to around 7–7:30 pm; confirm locally before you go, especially on festival days. Wear traditional, modest clothing with shoulders and knees covered. Festival days, particularly during the Brahmotsavam, draw large crowds from the surrounding towns, so allow extra time and expect queues for darshan. Photography inside the sanctum is not permitted.

How to reach

Vaniyambadi is about 60 km from Vellore and around 200 km from Chennai, roughly four to five hours by road. The town has a railway station on the Chennai–Bengaluru line, and buses link it with Vellore, Krishnagiri and Tirupattur. We can combine a visit with Vellore's Jalakandeswarar temple and fort.
