Waterfalls
Kuntala Waterfalls, near Neredikonda village, are the highest in Telangana and flow strongest after the monsoon. Local tradition links the name to Shakuntala and King Dushyanta. A small Someshwara shrine stands beside the falls, and on Maha Shivaratri pilgrims come to bathe here before worship.
Pochera Waterfalls are gentler and quieter, a good second stop on the same day if you have a car.
Wildlife sanctuaries
Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary spreads over roughly 893 sq km of teak and bamboo forest and was notified as a tiger reserve in 2012. It lies about 250 km from Hyderabad and is the largest protected forest in the region.
The smaller Pranahita Wildlife Sanctuary (about 136 sq km) follows the Pranahita river, where you may see sloth bears, langurs, hyenas and leopards. Sivaram Wildlife Sanctuary, about 36 sq km on the Godavari banks, is known above all for its mugger crocodiles, along with wild boar and pythons.
Temples and culture
Jainath Temple, around 21 km from town, is built in the Jain style and carries a Prakrit inscription; it is busiest during the Karthika month festival. The Basar Saraswathi Temple on the Godavari is one of very few shrines to the goddess of learning, and families bring young children here for Akshara Abhyasam, their first lesson in letters, especially at Vasant Panchami and Navaratri.
In town, Kala Ashram, set up by Ravindra Sharma in 1979, keeps a library and works to preserve folk and traditional crafts. Mahatma Gandhi Park is a shaded spot for a morning walk.
Best time and how to reach
October to March is the most comfortable season for sightseeing and forest visits. Carry insect repellent, sturdy shoes and a light jacket for winter evenings.
The town is on the rail network, with trains to Hyderabad and other major cities, and national highways link it by bus to Hyderabad and Medak. The nearest airport is Hyderabad, roughly 320 km away, from where you continue by cab or bus. We can arrange a car and driver for the full circuit.
