Wildlife
The sanctuary was set up mainly to protect the blackbuck, which was once under serious pressure in the region. Today it also shelters sloth bears, langurs, hyenas, jungle cats and leopards, and tigers are occasionally recorded moving through the forest.
Sightings are never guaranteed here. Early mornings and late afternoons give the best chances, and a local guide makes a real difference. Birdlife along the riverbanks is another reward for patient visitors, and the silence of the forest is part of the appeal.
Fossils and landscape
Apart from animals, the sanctuary holds fossil beds that interest people with a leaning towards geology and natural history. The ground is uneven and wild in places, so exploring feels closer to a field trip than a regular park visit.
The river gives the forest a lush look that is unusual for this part of the Deccan.
Best time to visit
October to March is the best window. The weather is cool, trails are dry enough to walk, and animals are easier to spot as water sources shrink. The monsoon months can make tracks muddy and hard to use, and April to June is very hot.
Tips for your visit
Tourist facilities are minimal, so this is a trip for travellers who are comfortable with simple arrangements. Check entry rules with the Telangana forest department before you go, carry water, food and insect repellent, and wear muted colours. Stay on marked tracks, keep noise down and never feed or approach animals. A full day lets you explore without rushing. Adilabad and Mancherial are the usual bases; we can arrange a vehicle and help you plan a combined trip with Kuntala Waterfalls and other sights in the district.
