Alleppey Backwater Holidays travel guide

Alleppey, officially Alappuzha, is the town most travellers pick when they want to spend a night on Kerala's backwaters. Its canals, lagoons and paddy fields connect to Vembanad Lake, and a slow ride on a kettuvallam (a converted rice barge) is the centrepiece of most trips. Add a beach sunset, an old church or temple, a spice-heavy fish lunch and you have an easy two-day break.

Why travellers choose Alleppey

The town is often called the Venice of the East because so much of daily life moves along water. Vembanad Lake, generally described as the longest lake in India, sits beside it, and the network of channels around Kuttanad lets you watch village life, coconut groves and rice fields from the deck of a houseboat.

Beyond the backwaters there are beaches, coir workshops, historic churches and temples, which makes it a good fit for couples, families and slow travellers alike.

What to see and do

Most visitors book an overnight houseboat, then add shorter experiences on land or in smaller boats.

Best time to visit

October to March is the peak season, with comfortable weather for cruises and sightseeing. April and May are hotter, but houseboat and hotel rates usually drop. From June to September the monsoon brings heavy rain and fewer outdoor options, yet many people come for Ayurvedic treatments and the green, quiet waterways. Every August, Punnamada Lake hosts the Nehru Trophy race for snake boats, and Onam also falls around this time.

How to reach

Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport, roughly 75 km away. Alappuzha railway station links the town with Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Bengaluru and Mumbai. By road, NH 66 passes through town, and KSRTC buses and taxis run from Kochi (about 53 km), Thiruvananthapuram (about 160 km) and Munnar (about 170 km). Some premium cruises also connect Alleppey with Kumarakom.

Food and shopping

Kerala cooking here leans heavily on coconut, curry leaves and pepper. Try karimeen pollichathu (pearl spot fish), appam with stew, puttu and kadala curry, and a full sadya on a banana leaf. For shopping, look for coir mats, cardamom and pepper, kasavu sarees, banana chips and coconut oil; the markets near Mullakkal Temple are handy. Two days is usually enough for a houseboat night, some time on the beach and a few local sights, and we can arrange Alleppey as part of a wider Kerala circuit with Kochi, Munnar or Thekkady.
