What you will find
Stalls crowd the narrow lanes, piled with tomatoes, beans, gourds, bananas, citrus and whatever is in season. The flower section is the most photogenic, with strings of jasmine buds, heaps of orange marigolds and roses being tied into garlands by hand. These are bought for temple offerings, weddings, festivals and simply to decorate the home.
Around the market, small eateries and snack shops serve South Indian favourites, so it is easy to stop for coffee and a bite between browsing.
The neighbourhood
Basavanagudi is one of Bengaluru's older residential areas, with shady roads, heritage houses and family-run shops that have traded here for decades. Many visitors pair the market with the Bull Temple, which houses a large monolithic Nandi. Moving from the calm temple courtyard into the noise of the market makes for a good contrast.
Best time to go
The market is busy all day, but early morning is the best time: traders arrive with fresh stock from farms outside the city and you can watch the stalls being set up. Late afternoon is also pleasant, when shoppers return after work and the flower sellers prepare for evening worship.
Tips for your visit
Wear comfortable shoes, as the lanes can be wet and crowded. Ask before photographing vendors; most are friendly and happy to chat. Bargaining is normal but kept good-humoured. Carry small change, since many stalls prefer cash or UPI for small amounts, and bring a cloth bag if you plan to buy anything. If you are on a Bengaluru city tour with us, we can add the market and the Bull Temple as a short morning stop.
