Khammam travel guide

Khammam is a district town on the Munneru river in eastern Telangana. It grew under a series of dynasties, from the Kakatiyas onwards, and its skyline is dominated by a fort on Stambhadri hill. It is not a major tourist hub, which means its temples, lakes and nearby forests are pleasantly uncrowded. It makes a useful stop between Hyderabad and the Godavari region.

Khammam Fort

The fort on Stambhadri hill dates back to the Kakatiya period and is roughly a thousand years old. Later rulers repaired and extended it, so the structure shows both Hindu and Islamic building styles, with gateways, bastions and temple remains inside its walls. The climb rewards you with a wide view over the town.

Temples

The Lakshmi Narasimha temple on Stambhadri hill is the town's oldest shrine, and local tradition places its origin far back in legend. At Kallur, the Venugopala Swamy temple is about 400 years old, and a nearby Shiva temple with five self-manifested lingas is linked to the reign of Rani Rudrama Devi. Nelakondapalli, Jamalapuram and the Kusumanchi Shiva temple are also popular with visitors.

Nature

Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary covers about 635 sq km of dry deciduous forest around the Kinnerasani reservoir. Sambar, wild boar, jackals, hyenas, pythons and many birds live here, and big cats such as leopards are also reported. The deer park and the dam are the usual stops.

Closer to town, Lakaram lake has a lakeside park with boating and is a popular evening spot for families.

Food

Try sakinalu, the crisp rice-flour rings made in Telangana homes, along with biryani and mandi, which are widely available in town.

Best time and how to reach

The most comfortable season runs from October to February, with daytime temperatures around 25–32°C, comfortable for temple visits. Summers are very hot. The nearest airport is Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International. Khammam has its own railway station on the Kazipet–Vijayawada line, and good roads link it with Hyderabad and Vijayawada.
