What to do
The whole visit is unhurried; an hour or two is enough, and it is a good break during a longer drive through Telangana. Weekends and holidays are busier with local families, so visit on a weekday morning if you want the paths mostly to yourself. Carry water and a cap, as some parts of the walk have little shade at midday.
- Walk the lakeside paths or sit by the water in the cool of the evening
- Take a boat ride, popular with children
- Relax on the lawns and shaded spots of Lake View Park next to the lake
- Watch water birds, especially in the early morning
About Khammam
Local tradition links the town's name to Narasimha, the man-lion form of Vishnu, who burst out of a pillar to destroy the demon king Hiranyakashipu and save the young devotee Prahlada. The pillar, or kamba, gave the hill its name, Kambamettu, which in time became Khammam. The town blends old temples with the busy life of a district headquarters.
Nearby places
In town you can combine the lake with visits to the Swami Ayyappa Temple and Sitaramachandra Swamy Temple, or head out to Dhanvayi Gudem Park and the Palair Reservoir if you prefer open spaces. Khammam Fort, on its granite hill, is also close by and makes a good pairing, with ramparts that look over the town. Visiting both in one afternoon is easy, ending at the lake as the light fades.
Best time and how to reach
October to March brings the most pleasant weather for outdoor sightseeing. Khammam has its own railway station with good connections, and autos from the station or bus stand reach the lake quickly. The nearest airport is Hyderabad, about 200 km away. We can include Lakaram Lake in a relaxed Telangana itinerary.
