Cherai Beach, Cochin

Cherai Beach lies on the northern end of Vypin island, about 25 km from Kochi, and is one of the easiest beaches to reach from the city. It is unusual in having the Arabian Sea on one side and quiet backwaters, paddy fields and coconut groves only a few hundred metres behind it. The water is shallow and generally gentle close to shore, which makes it a popular spot for families.

What to expect

The sand stretches for several kilometres, so it is easy to find a quiet patch away from the main entry point. A paved promenade of around 400 metres, lit by tall lamps, is pleasant for an evening walk. Chinese fishing nets, known locally as cheena vala, stand along the backwater side. Dolphins are occasionally seen offshore, especially in the calmer months, and there is a small children's park near the main entrance.

Things to do

Swimming is the main draw when the sea is calm, but pay attention to lifeguard flags and avoid going far out. Operators offer water scooters, speedboat rides and kayaking, and some stays arrange canoe trips into the backwaters behind the beach. A kite festival and beach festival are held here each December.

Nearby places

Kuzhupilly Beach, about 4 km south, is quieter. The Paliam Dutch Palace at Chendamangalam, around 10 km away, was the home of the Paliath Achans, hereditary prime ministers to the Kochi rajas, and is now part of the Muziris Heritage Project. Several Ayurveda resorts along the coast offer massages and treatments.

Best time to visit

October to February is the best season, with calm seas and pleasant weather. The south-west monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and rough water, and swimming is not advisable then.

How to reach

Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery is about 25 km away. The nearest major railway station is Ernakulam, roughly 28 km. By road, the drive from central Kochi across the Goshree bridges and up Vypin island takes around 40 minutes outside rush hour. We can include Cherai in a Kochi city tour or a Kerala beach and backwater itinerary.
