What to see
The falls are visible from the road, a bright white ribbon of water sliding over the rocks, which gives them their name. There is a viewing area near the base where you can feel the spray and take photographs. For many visitors it is the first real sign that they have reached the cool air of the hills. After the monsoon the flow is at its strongest and the fall is at its most impressive; in the dry months it thins to several separate streams.
Food and stalls
The roadside by the falls is lined with small stalls. Look for freshly cut fruit, roasted corn, home-made chocolates and hot snacks, and in season, pears, plums and passion fruit grown on farms in the Palani hills around Kodaikanal.
Tips for your visit
- Swimming and bathing are not allowed; the rocks are slippery and the current can be strong
- Keep an eye on food and bags, as monkeys are common here
- Parking is along the road, so traffic can slow at weekends
- 15–30 minutes is usually enough for the stop
- Carry a light jacket, since the air cools quickly as you climb
Best time and how to reach
The falls are fullest during and just after the rainy months, though they are pleasant to visit all year. Silver Cascade lies on the main Batlagundu–Kodaikanal ghat road, so you pass it by car, taxi or bus on the way up from Madurai or Kodai Road station. Madurai is the nearest airport. We can include it as the first stop of a Kodaikanal package.
