History and what to see
The fort dates back to the Kakatiya period and was later held and strengthened by other Deccan rulers, including the Qutb Shahis. Today you can walk through its old gateways, along stretches of rampart and among the remains of buildings and structures inside. The views from the top are the main reward, especially in the soft light of morning or late afternoon.
Timings and tickets
The fort is open from 9 am to 5 pm, and there is no entry fee. Wear sturdy shoes for the uneven paths and steps, and carry water, as there is little shade on the hill.
Best time to visit
October to February is the best season for exploring forts in Telangana, with cool, dry weather. The monsoon, from June to September, turns the countryside green but rain can interrupt plans. March to May is hot, so visit early in the day if you come then.
Other heritage sites in Telangana
Medak Fort can be part of a longer heritage trip across the state:
- Charminar and Golconda Fort in Hyderabad, from the Qutb Shahi era
- Warangal Fort, with its carved Kakatiya gateways (Kakatiya Kala Thoranam)
- The Thousand Pillar Temple in Hanamkonda and the Ramappa Temple, both Kakatiya masterpieces
- The Alampur temples in the south of the state
How to reach
Medak is roughly 100 km from Hyderabad, which has the nearest airport and major railway stations. Buses run regularly from Hyderabad, and a car takes two to three hours. We can plan a day trip covering the fort and the cathedral.
