Who was Ananda Ranga Pillai
A merchant and translator, Ananda Ranga Pillai worked as the go-between for the French administration and local traders and rulers. Over many years he kept a detailed diary of events in the town, from trade and politics to festivals and gossip at the governor's court. Historians still rely on it to understand the period, which makes his home a natural stop for anyone curious about the town's past.
What to see
The house is best known for its woodwork. Look for the carved wooden pillars and doors, and the decorated inner courtyard around which the rooms are arranged. The layout follows the Tamil style of homes built around an open central space, while some details show the influence of the French neighbourhood nearby.
- Carved wooden pillars and doorways
- Ornate central courtyard
- A mix of Tamil and colonial design details
Timings and tickets
The house is reported to be open every day between 10 am and 6 pm with no entry charge. It remains a family property, so access to the interior can change; we suggest confirming before you go. Photography is generally allowed on the exterior. An hour or two is enough for a relaxed visit.
Combine it with
The house sits within easy reach of the town's other heritage stops. Promenade Beach, Sri Aurobindo Ashram and the French War Memorial on Goubert Avenue are all close by, and the Aayi Mandapam in Bharathi Park and the Puducherry Museum fit well into the same walking loop. We can plan a half-day heritage walk covering these along with the White Town streets.
