What it offers
Its main work is teaching French, from complete beginners to advanced learners, with an emphasis on speaking and listening in real situations rather than on rote learning. Students also use its library and media centre, with books, films, magazines and French radio and television. There is a section for children as well.
For visitors
The centre regularly holds exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, talks and workshops, many of them open to the public. It is worth checking its programme before your trip; an evening event can be a relaxed way to meet local residents and students. Short courses may also suit travellers staying in Puducherry for a few weeks. Office hours and class timings change by term, so contact the centre directly before planning a visit around an event.
Puducherry's French connection
Puducherry was a French territory for nearly three centuries, and it joined India in 1954. The legacy shows in the grid of streets in the White Town, the yellow and white colonial houses, street names in French, bakeries and cafés, and in institutions such as this one. Pair a visit with a walk past the Ananda Ranga Pillai house, the Promenade and the Sri Aurobindo Ashram.
How to reach
The Alliance Française is only about 600 m from Puducherry railway station, easy to reach on foot along South Boulevard. From Chennai International Airport, it is roughly 150 km by the East Coast Road. Buses and cars connect Puducherry with Chennai, Bengaluru and towns across Tamil Nadu, and Auroville is a short drive north. Autos and rented bicycles or scooters are the easiest way to get around the old town.
