Rajasthan travel guide

Rajasthan, in north-western India, is the country's largest state and the home of the Rajput kingdoms whose forts and palaces still dominate its cities. Much of the west is covered by the Thar Desert, while the Aravalli range runs across the state. Travellers come for Jaipur's pink old city, Udaipur's lakes, Jodhpur's blue houses and Jaisalmer's sand dunes, along with folk music, crafts and hearty desert food.

Where to go

Jaipur, the capital, forms the Golden Triangle circuit with Delhi and Agra and is home to Amer Fort, Hawa Mahal, City Palace and Jantar Mantar. Udaipur is built around lakes such as Pichola, Jodhpur is watched over by Mehrangarh Fort, and Jaisalmer's sandstone fort rises from the desert. Pushkar, Bikaner, Chittorgarh and Mount Abu each add something different, and many old palaces now run as heritage hotels.

Culture and food

Ghoomar and Kalbelia dances, puppet shows and Rajasthani folk music are part of many evenings here. Major events include the Pushkar Camel Fair, the Jaisalmer Desert Festival, Teej and Gangaur. Its cooking developed around scarce water and few fresh greens, which is why lentils, dried beans and ghee feature so much: try gatte ki sabzi, dal baati churma, ker sangri and laal maas.

Best time to visit

October to March is the best window, with daytime temperatures roughly between 10°C and 27°C and most of the big fairs and festivals. April to June is very hot, often above 45°C in Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Jodhpur; if you must travel then, Mount Abu is the cooler option. The July to September monsoon brings modest rain and makes Udaipur, Bundi and Mount Abu green.

How to reach

Jaipur International Airport is the main gateway, with other airports at Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Kota. Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ajmer, Udaipur City, Bikaner and Jaisalmer stations link to Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Kolkata, and the Palace on Wheels luxury train tours the state. By road, NH-48 gets you from Delhi to Jaipur in about five to six hours, and RSRTC buses connect all major towns. We can plan flights and a private car circuit from Tamil Nadu.
