History
The fort takes its name from the goddess Amba, and it served as the seat of the Kachhwaha Rajput rulers for well over a century. Its design mixes Rajput and Mughal ideas: fortified walls outside, and inside, gardens, painted halls, carved screens and temples laid out around a series of courtyards.
What to see
Sheesh Mahal, the mirror palace, is the star attraction. Its walls and ceilings are covered with small mirrors and coloured glass, and a single flame is said to fill the room with countless points of light.
- Sheesh Mahal, the mirror hall
- Jai Mandir, the hall of victory with fine mirror and inlay work
- Sukh Niwas, cooled by water channels in summer
- Diwan-i-Aam, the hall of public audience
- Shila Devi Temple
Things to do
An evening light and sound show tells the story of the fort and its rulers. The traditional elephant ride up the ramp is still offered, though many visitors now prefer to walk or take a jeep. Around Amer town you can hike on the surrounding hills and browse shops selling block prints, jewellery and other Rajasthani crafts.
Best time and how to reach
September to February brings mild weather that suits a long walk through the palace. Summer afternoons are very hot, so go early in the day. Plan at least two to three hours inside. Hiring a licensed guide at the gate helps you make sense of the many courtyards, and wear shoes with good grip, as some ramps and stairs are steep.
Taxis and auto-rickshaws run from Jaipur, and organised city tours usually start the day here. We can arrange a Jaipur car with a guide, combining Amer with Nahargarh and Jaigarh on the same ridge.
