Beyond the city
Araku Valley is a cool hill region of coffee estates and tribal villages, reachable by road or by the scenic train through the ghats. On the way are the Borra Caves, large limestone caves full of stalactite and stalagmite formations, and the Katiki Waterfalls near Borra. Lambasingi, often called the Kashmir of Andhra Pradesh, is known for misty winter mornings.
History
The city's name is linked to Visakha, and Buddhist relics at sites such as Thotlakonda show the religion was strong here in ancient times. It later grew into a major port and the headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command, which explains the naval memorials along the beach road.
Best time to visit
October to March is the best season, with temperatures of roughly 15–27°C and events such as the Visakha Utsav. April to June is hot and humid, and the July to September monsoon brings sticky weather that limits beach time.
How to reach and what to eat
Visakhapatnam Airport has flights from Chennai, Hyderabad and other cities, and Visakhapatnam Junction is on the main Howrah–Chennai rail line. The city bus station connects the rest of Andhra Pradesh. Try bamboo chicken in Araku, cooked inside a bamboo tube over charcoal, along with coastal Andhra seafood and the sweet Madugula halwa.
