Trivandrum, or Thiruvananthapuram, is Kerala's capital, with its main temple, museums and government offices in the centre and the beaches at Kovalam and Shanghumukham close by. Traffic around East Fort and Thampanoor is heavy, and parking near the temple is limited. A car with a local driver makes the city easy to see, and opens up day trips to Varkala, Ponmudi and Kanyakumari. It is also a comfortable way to start a longer Kerala tour heading north.
