Architecture
The mosque's white facade, with tall minarets and domes, stands out sharply against the busy streets around it. The prayer halls are spacious, with cool marble floors and chandeliers, and are designed to take a very large congregation, especially for Friday prayers.
Look for the fine lattice (jali) work, the balconies on the upper floors and the large ablution pool. The combination of practical space and careful decoration is what gives the building its character.
Significance
Jamia Masjid is one of the main centres of worship for Muslims in Bangalore and also acts as a community hub, with religious teaching and gatherings through the year. It is especially busy during Ramzan, when iftar gatherings fill the surrounding streets in the evenings, and on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
Tips for your visit
Visitors of all faiths are generally welcome outside prayer times. Dress modestly, with arms and legs covered, and women should carry a scarf to cover their heads. Shoes are left at the entrance. Avoid the Friday midday prayer if you want to look around quietly, and ask before taking photographs inside.
The streets around City Market are very crowded, so walking or taking an autorickshaw is easier than a car. The market itself, Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace and the Bangalore Fort remains are all close by, and we can plan an old-Bangalore walk that takes them in.
How to reach
The mosque is in the City Market area, well served by city buses and autorickshaws. The Majestic bus stand and Bangalore City railway station are a short ride away, and taxis run from Kempegowda International Airport.
