Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bangalore

This science museum on Kasturba Road, beside Cubbon Park, is Bengaluru's main science museum and a good half-day stop for families. It is named after Sir M. Visvesvaraya, the engineer and Dewan of Mysore remembered for dams, industries and institutions across Karnataka. Jawaharlal Nehru opened it on 14 July 1962, and its galleries still lean towards hands-on displays rather than glass cases.

What to see

The museum has seven permanent galleries spread over several floors. The Engine Hall, with cut-away engines and machines, shows how everyday mechanisms work, while the Electrotechnic gallery covers electricity and power. Fun Science is full of puzzles and illusions, and the Space gallery looks at satellites and rockets. There are also halls on biotechnology and on electronics, the latter supported by Bharat Electronics, and a gallery made especially for younger children.

Shows and activities

Outside the galleries, a life-size replica of the Wright brothers' first aeroplane and a small dinosaur park are popular photo stops. Science on a Sphere projects global data such as weather and ocean currents onto a large globe. The museum also runs a Taramandal (small planetarium) show, live science demonstrations, sky-watching sessions on certain evenings and public lectures; check the day's schedule at the ticket counter.

Tips for your visit

Allow at least two to three hours, more if you have children who like to press every button. Weekday mornings are busy with school groups, so late morning or early afternoon can be calmer. Shows carry small extra charges, and there is a canteen on the premises.

How to reach

The museum sits next to the Government Museum and Venkatappa Art Gallery on Kasturba Road, a short walk from Cubbon Park and MG Road. Cubbon Park and MG Road Metro stations on the Purple Line are both nearby. KSR Bengaluru City railway station is a short drive away, and taxis from Kempegowda International Airport take about an hour depending on traffic. Combine it with the Vidhana Soudha and Cubbon Park for a full day in the centre.
