Madhavendra Bhawan
The main building inside the fort was added by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh. It contains a set of twelve matching suites for his queens, linked by corridors to the king's own rooms. The walls and alcoves are decorated with delicate frescoes, and walking through the rooms gives a good sense of how the royal household lived.
Other things to see
Just below the fort lies the Nahargarh Biological Park, a protected forest area with native plants, birds and animals, a calm change from the busy city. Within the fort grounds is a small shrine to Nahar Singh Bhomia, the local guardian deity after whom the fort is said to be named.
Many visitors stay into the evening, when the fort is lit up and the lights of Jaipur come on below. Cafes on the ramparts make a pleasant spot to wait for sunset.
Tips for your visit
September to March is the most comfortable season. Wear light cotton clothes and sturdy shoes, as there is a fair amount of walking and climbing, and carry water. Some visitors like to cycle around the fort area to cover more ground. Guides can be hired at the entrance, or we can arrange one in advance; fees depend on the length of the tour.
How to reach
Nahargarh is reached by a winding hill road from Jaipur, and taxis and auto-rickshaws make the trip easily. A walking trail also climbs up from the old city for those who enjoy a hike. Nahargarh sits on the same ridge as Jaigarh and Amer, so the three are often covered together. We can arrange a Jaipur car and guide for the day.
