History
The building was part of the old port facilities of French Pondicherry. The town's pier was wrecked by a cyclone in 1952, and remnants of the old iron pier can still be seen in the sea nearby. The port office was later turned into a café, giving it a rare spot right on the water.
What to expect
The menu is short and casual: coffee, including a decent espresso, sandwiches, baked goods, snacks and ice cream. Prices are reasonable, there is open-air seating facing the waves, and a small gift counter. Many people come for a quick drink during a walk along the Promenade and stay longer than planned for the breeze and the view.
The café keeps very long hours and has often been open round the clock, so it is a handy place for an early coffee at sunrise or a late snack.
Best time to go
Sunrise is special here, since the café faces east over the sea and you can watch fishing boats heading out. Evenings are busiest, when the Promenade fills with walkers. Weekends can be crowded, so go early for a seat by the water.
Getting there and nearby
Le Café is on the beach road in the French quarter, within walking distance of most heritage hotels. From Puducherry bus stand or railway station it is a short auto ride. The Gandhi statue, the old lighthouse and the war memorial are all along the same stretch of the Promenade. Hiring a bicycle is an easy way to explore the town from here.
