What to do

Surfing is the main draw. The waves suit both beginners and experienced surfers, and a local surf school runs introductory lessons with boards provided. Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are also offered on calmer days. Otherwise, the beach is a place to walk, sit on the rocks and watch the fishing boats come and go.

Late afternoon and evening are the most pleasant times, when the heat eases and the light softens. Surfers, on the other hand, often head out early in the morning, when the water is usually less crowded. The best waves generally come in the months around the monsoons, so ask the surf school what to expect during your dates.

Food

Beach shacks and small restaurants nearby serve Tamil-style seafood, from fried fish and prawns to spicy fish curry, along with the cafés that have grown up to serve surfers and travellers.

Around the beach

There are few formal sights close by, which is part of the appeal. A short walk into the fishing village shows you everyday coastal life. The heritage quarter of Puducherry, Auroville and the other beaches along the coast are all a short drive away.

Safety and tips

• Swim only in calm conditions and stay clear of the rocks; the sea can be rough, especially during the monsoon.
• Take surf lessons only with a recognised school, and tell the instructor honestly how well you swim.
• Carry water, sunscreen and a hat; shade is limited.
• Respect the fishing community and ask before photographing people.

How to reach

Puducherry airport is about 6 km from the beach, though it has limited flights; Chennai International Airport, roughly 150 km away, is the main gateway. From Puducherry railway station the beach is a short taxi or auto ride. Buses run to Puducherry from Chennai, Vellore and other cities, and we can arrange a car from Virudhachalam.
