About this trail
Porivarai is a large rock shelter below Kotagiri whose walls carry hundreds of old paintings. Figures of animals, hunters, fights and patterns give a picture of life in these hills long ago. The trail from Karikaiyur covers about 3 km each way through forest and open slopes, and the guide explains what the paintings show once you reach the site.
The 6 km round trip takes about three hours. Some uphill sections make it a moderate walk, but it is well within reach for most people. Please do not touch the paintings; oils from skin damage them. Stay in Kotagiri or Ooty.

Good to know
These are guided trails run with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, and each has a daily limit on walkers. Book a few days ahead, carry the same photo ID you booked with, and expect a trail to close at short notice after heavy rain or when elephants are active nearby. We book the permit, arrange the car to and from the start point and, if you want, a hotel nearby for the night before.
