What to see
Enter through the North Gate if the Glass House is your first stop. Modelled on London's Crystal Palace, it hosts the city's big flower shows. The Lal Bagh rock, an outcrop of peninsular gneiss about 3,000 million years old, rises near the East Gate and gives good views over the garden.
- The Glass House and its seasonal flower displays
- Lal Bagh Lake, good for a quiet walk
- Fossilised remains of an ancient coniferous tree
- Bonsai garden and flowering beds of begonia, fuchsia and orchids
- Statue of Chamaraja Wodeyar and the old Lal Bagh House
Flower shows and learning
Two major flower shows are held around Republic Day in January and Independence Day in August, and they draw very large crowds. The garden also runs courses in horticulture, bonsai, Ikebana and mushroom growing.
Birdwatching and photography
Early mornings are best for birds around the lake. Look for pond herons, egrets, Brahminy kites and purple moorhens. Photographers enjoy the flowering trees and the Glass House light.
Best time to visit
Bengaluru's weather is mild through the year, but November to February is the most pleasant. Plan around the January or August shows if you want to see the Glass House at its fullest, and arrive early on those days.
Getting there
There are four gates: North (Glass House side), the main South Gate, East Gate near Jayanagar and West Gate near Siddapura. Kempegowda International Airport is about 37 km from the city centre, and Bengaluru City and Yeshwantpur are the main railway stations. City buses, autos and the Metro all serve the area, and we can include Lal Bagh in a Bengaluru city tour.
