About the trip
Kollam is an old trading town at the mouth of Ashtamudi Lake, often called the gateway to Kerala's backwaters. It is quieter than Alleppey, and visitors come for canal boat rides, the Thangassery lighthouse and fort ruins, and fresh seafood. The drive from Poovar runs through Trivandrum and up the coastal highway, with Varkala only a short detour.
